Beyond the Plate: Why Teaching Athletes About Nutrition Isn't Enough
A new review of nearly 4,400 youth athletes finds that better nutrition advice alone rarely changes behavior, and coaches and parents must step up to create the supportive environments young performers need to thrive.
Young athletes are not eating what their bodies need. A fresh analysis of more than 57 studies involving nearly 4,400 children and adolescents in team sports paints a clear picture: energy intake is too low, key micronutrients such as iron and calcium fall short, and the knowledge gap between knowing what is healthy and doing what is healthy remains wide.
The research was published today in Journal of Sport for Development by Neil Irwin, Ciaran O Cathain, Cormac Ward, and David Kelly from Ireland’s Athletes Performance Institute. It represents the first comprehensive scoping review to map out how diet, nutrition knowledge, and behavior intersect in youth team sport athletes across Europe.
The core problem is that young performers face unique nutritional demands. Their bodies are growing fast while training intensity climbs sharply, meaning they require more fuel than most teenagers consume day to day. Yet, tracking what these athletes actually eat during intense practice periods remains difficult for researchers, which casts uncertainty over some of the reported nutrient shortfalls.
Perhaps more concerning is what happens when coaches and sport programs try to help. The authors found that simply handing out nutrition facts or running educational workshops about healthy eating rarely leads to lasting change. Athletes absorb information but do not always act on it, suggesting that knowledge alone cannot drive behavior in the way that habit formation can.
So what works instead? The review points toward social and environmental strategies as the key. When parents reinforce good choices at home, when coaches model balanced meals during training camps, and when peer groups normalize healthy eating within a team culture, athletes are far more likely to stick with it. These external supports create the scaffolding that makes personal change possible.
Irwin emphasized the need for sports organizations to move beyond one-off advice sessions. “We know from this review that education is not enough,” he said. “To actually improve what young athletes eat, we must build environments where good nutrition becomes normal and accessible.”
The paper calls for standardized guidelines around youth sport nutrition so that every team—whether school-based or club-run—operates from the same baseline of care. It also urges researchers to invest in better methods for measuring what athletes put on their plates during real training cycles, rather than relying solely on food frequency questionnaires that can blur accuracy.
The findings carry direct implications for parents, coaches, and athletic administrators across Ireland and beyond. Rather than treating nutrition as a peripheral topic, these groups should view it as central to athlete development—one that demands coordinated effort from everyone around the young performer.
